Three of Cal’s best ready to help Shriners
In what may be the best show of giving from the sport of football, three Bears will be ready to do their part in contributing to the giving that goes on for the 84th annual East-West Shrine Game.
The game is a showcase for some of the best players in all of college football, but it is also a way to help raise funds for the Shriners Hospital for Children. Here’s an excerpt from their website :
“Every year since 1925, the East-West Game has been played to raise funds for Shriners Hospitals for Children and to raise awareness about the expert orthopaedic, burn, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and cleft lip and palate care, available at no charge to patients and families, through the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children.”
Even though this game has a great cause, it’s also a great vehicle for the players to showcase their talents to a plethora of pro scouts and personel. It could turn a player who is an afterthought into one that becomes drafted in April. When a team drafts a player, they are more likely to keep them through camp due to the added value of being picked. While it doesn’t assure a player of making the team, if their performance is equal to an older veteran or an undrafted rookie, the team will normally pick the player they drafted to keep.
Everything matters while the players are there, including how each player practices. That can be quite a bit of pressure to perform. That shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the three that Cal is sending to the game.
Anthony Felder, Worrell Williams, and Nick Sundberg have already built up a solid resume’ during their days at Cal. Both Felder and Williams were part of one of the top linebacking corps in the nation, and are already projected to late the first day or early the second day of the NFL draft. Sundberg is a long-snapping specialist, which can make him an intriguing prospect for a pro team since players with that skill are difficult to come by.
It should be a special experience for each player. Hopefully, it will be an experience that will give them a leg up in their pro careers. Here’s the information on the game:
