Montgomery and the Bears look to bounce back

Published by Rob Calonge at 5:51 pm under College Basketball Edit This

Mike Montgomery and the Bears (15-3, 4-1 Pac-10) will look to put their loss to rival Stanford in the rear-view mirror this Thursday when they host the (6-10, 1-5 Pac-10) Oregon State Beavers at Haas Pavilion.

It should be exactly what Cal needs after facing off on the road at three of the toughest places to play in the Pac-10.  Oregon State won only six games last season and will be rolling into Berkeley with just one win over Pac-10 opponents in their last 26 games played within the conference.

In other words, it should be an easy victory for the Golden Bears.

As long as they can get through the hangover of their loss on Saturday, the Bears should be very comfortable playing the Beavers at home.  They’d better be.  At Montgomery’s weekly press conference, he was asked about the importance of winning at home.

You can’t make up home losses. A home loss is a double-edged sword. The team that beats you gets a plus and you get a minus. They essentially get two games on you. That’s the way I’ve always looked at it. If you want to have a chance to compete for the top spots in this conference you have to win at home and then sneak out as many as you can on the road. Then as you start getting to the end you look and say that if you can win these next couple games you can win the conference. Early on, you’re just trying to make sure that you win at home, because it’s tough to win on the road and the games fall in a different sequence. You look at home people who have had a pretty tough schedule and we’ll have that same stretch sometime down the road. It’s important to win at home.

Victories over the Beavers and then the Oregon Ducks, they’ll be set up for a game of the week when they go to Southern California to meet UCLA.
